Five Tips On Drawing Numbering System For Civil Engineer

Reading Level: Beginner

It is common that civil engineer needs to prepare drawings. It is carried out after the design of structure or civil works has been completed. How to have a proper drawing numbering system in order to has better presentation? Below are some tips on drawing numbering system.

1. Time control.

It is useful that a project starts with month and year. As for example, if an awarded project on say 12 April 2007 than your drawing number may 042007 and not 120402007, because it may become to complicate. On the other hand, you can select year as control item 2007. Initial drawing number will be 042007

2. Client name control.

Let say, your client is ABC Company and with item 1; your drawing number will be ABC/042007.

3. Engineering field control.

Say your project is building a unit of structural building. You may further add with "ST". "ST" is abbreviate for structural. You can use other abbreviation as your preference. Then drawing number will be ABC/042007/ST. For civil works such as earthwork, you can use "EW", water work use "WT", sewer work use "SW", drainage work use "DR" etc.

4. Type of structural element control.

When you design the building structure, the structural elements may consist of pad footing foundation, column, beam, slab etc. You have to use a list of abbreviation for the structural elements such as pad footing foundation-"PF", column-"COL", beam-"BM" and slab-"SB". For instance your drawing is showing beam details, then your drawing number will be ABC/042007/ST/BM01 (first drawing), ABC/042007/ST/BM02 (second drawing) and continue with this notation. This type of arrangement is good for adding any new drawing into every section without disturbing the overall drawing number. As for example, you are using only one type of notation say ST for all structural elements, then your drawing number will be ABC/042007/ST/01, ABC/042007/ST/02, ABC/042007/ST/03 ...

When or during the project in progress, there will be tendency of amendment happened. If you need to add one sheet of beam drawing into your project drawing number and the beam drawing numbers are in the range of ABC/042007/ST/03 to ABC/042007/ST/04. Total number of drawings says 10 numbers; last drawing number will be ABC/042007/ST/10. How to add a drawing after ABC/042007/ST/05? You have to add it after ABC/042007/ST/10 i.e. ABC/042007/ST/11. However, it will not in the sequence of beam drawing arrangement. If you have more break down as mention earlier, then it is easy to add a new drawing into each section and for the current case is ABC/042007/ST/BM03. It will not affect the presentation of drawings.

5. Drawing amendment.

When there is an amendment on a particular sheet of drawing say drawing number is ABC/042007/ST/02. How will be the amendment to be shown on drawing number? One suggestion is using abc notation. ABC/042007/ST/02a is first amendment; ABC/042007/ST/02b is second amendment etc.

In short, the formula for drawing number will be

[name]/[time]/[engineering field]/[type of element][numbering][amendment].

When you follow the numbering system as mention, your project drawing numbering can be easily to be interpretation.

What Are The Common Problems Encountered On Project Management Work-Civil And Structural Engineer?

One of the tasks of civil engineer is the project management. Wherever a project commence, it is starting of 'live' of project problem until it has been completed build. Below are some of common problems that civil engineer may faced:

1. Project commenced without acknowledgment of civil engineer. It is common especially for small scale of project; such as single unit of structure like bungalow. Engineer will only alert whenever problem is happened at site; and problem is unable to resolve it by contractor. Contractor will like to build it without interruption of engineer.

2. Even though civil engineer aware about the construction work, some of un- responsible contractor will try to do some work in the time that engineer is unable to present. As for example; contractor carry out the concreting work after office hour especially in the evening, nighttime and public holiday. Once concreted, engineer is unable to inspect it.

3. Whenever construction started, un-experience contractor will do work by referring to civil engineering drawings without read in-conjunction with other professional drawing such as architecture, mechanical and electrical drawings. As a result, there will be a number of hacking during or after completion of structural works. It incurred a number of arguments and costs.

4. Even though an inexperience contractor is read engineering drawings, somehow contractor is build to their own knowledge; especially from contractor previous project. If previously contractor had been built a number of pad footing foundation, contractor obtain a piling foundation project. The contractor will try to change it to pad footing foundation by his own knowledge. Or even in pad footing foundation, contractor will change pad footing to smaller size. It will end up with structural problem.

5. Some irresponsible contractor will ignore engineer instruction. Contractor will build to his own knowledge. Contractor will always persuade client that contractor is builder. Contractor tells client that he is more site experience than civil engineer. Engineer has not much site building experience. Most of the time, client will agree with contractor because contractor shown client with physical construction works and engineer without much of physical product. These will continue until problem happened and unable to resolve by contractor. Finally, they will seek for engineer advice.

6. Contractor perform cost cutting on project work. Now days, project cost is very competitive. In order to obtain a project by bidding, some contractor may lower down the bidding cost to below the cost. When project is awarded, contractor will perform unnecessary cost cutting. This will endanger client.

7. When client is contractor and contractor is client, civil engineer will be in difficult position on dealing with client and contractor. There will be always in conflict of interest.

These problems may faced by civil engineer. How to overcome them will mainly base on engineer experience. Junior engineer shall not advice to send them to resolve these matters. Anyway, junior engineer shall be in guidance of senior engineer whenever problems are being solved.

From Ruined Alcoholic to Successful Software Engineer - Motivational Story of the Day

Today's story is perfect inspiration for people who think its too late to change their ways. Who have lost hope in their ability of changing life for better.

Paresh Parikh was born in middle class family. He was bright student and good in maths. He did engineering from good college. During his engineering days he fall in love with a girl (sneha) studying in arts college. The girl belonged to reputed family and her uncle was powerful politician.

Paresh also did fall in habit of alcohol. The occasional drink with friends,later turned into habit.

His marriage to sneha was full bollywood style where family of girl opposed marriage and paresh ran away with sneha. Sneha's uncle took this as insult and used all his might to catch the couple. They were caught too but it was too late since they were married by then. Gradually sneha's family accepted paresh and their marriage.

With marriage comes responsibility but impulsive paresh had formed habit of alcohol. He had become alcoholic and nightmare for sneha began. He was not typical Indian Alcoholic Man. He never abused or beat sneha but he was drunk for most of time. He was time and again sacked from his job. Marriage led to birth of daughter and their financial condition was ever deteriorating.

Sneha took a job and her money was providing with necessities of life. Paresh was hopeless man in last twenties. So much so that sneha had to often lock him to make sure he didn't drink. But paresh still use to find way to have alcohol. He use to call his supplier and hang his bag from second floor while his supplier use to give his bottle.

Sneha was depressed since her hard earned money was used by paresh for his alcohol. Then something happened which changed paresh forever. Depressed sneha could not take immense pressure of life and fainted in her office. Doctors detected heavy stress and gave ultimatum to paresh to change his habit.

Paresh changed that day. Paresh left alcohol from that day. Without any therapy, without any other help, he simply left alcohol. Perhaps he had realized that his love for alcohol is ruining his wife's health and future of his daughter.

During those era JAVA was buzz word in market. He borrowed money from his friends and enrolled in java course. He did give sun certification exam and became sun certified programmer. He also joined the same classes as instructor and after six months he joined an upcoming firm as programmer.

He remained in that job for two years. He applied for firm in USA and managed to clear the interview. He went to USA and is in USA since last 8 years.

Paresh was nicknamed as paresh batali (batali means bottle) by his neighbours but now paresh is held in high esteem. He hasn't come to India since he has gone but he remains in touch with most of his friend except his alcohol supplier!

Paresh's story is total turn around of a man from being labelled as gone case, hopeless to person who is responsible to take care of his family. Paresh's story is story of what man can become, no matter how he has been in past.

How an Engineer folds a T-Shirt

I know what I'm doing this weekend UPDATE: To the sudden explosion of people who commented on this, allow me to clarify a few things. I'm not an engineer, I am a nerd and do like making odd stuff like this occasionally. I made one of these devices using this vid and posted it up here so a mate of mine in Canada could see it. To the people leaving rather idiotic comments about me needing a life, to each his own, but someone did this in plastic and is probably making millions. I didn't make the video, something I should have clarified, I don't own the company shown, and yes I know they use em in department stores, that would be where I got the idea of making my own, seeing as this probably took bit of nutting out to make I think it qualifies as engineering, as most engineers I know like complex solutions to simple problems Lastly, it's a bit of fun. Remember that? Or is a pre-requisite to have all whimsy forcibly extracted when you get an internet connection?
