Landfill Design Principles

Risk Assessment

The overall approach to design, and the design of each element of the landfill appropriate to its environmental setting, is determined through risk assessment. The risk assessment approach is carried out to an agreed standard methodology. If the risk assessment indicates that the chosen site is suitable for the landfill proposed then the design can commence (subject to Health and Safety CDM, and ATEX (UK DSEAR etc Regs, - compliance requirements).

Design is an iterative process which should be reviewed both at its inception and before making any changes.

Any amendments to a design should be considered against all aspects of the design, construction and operational processes according to the, and cross-reference made to all other sections of the design document and other externally produced local guidance documents used as appropriate.

Landfill practice is a dynamic science, evolving continually as waste quality and quantity change, and in tandem with the (in the past) often revised regulatory requirements.

Landfill designers must consider probable changes in landfill practice that may occur over the whole lifetime of the landfill from conception to completion of aftercare and should, where possible, make provision for these changes, or allow for them to be incorporated at a later stage.

Stages in the Design Process

The landfill design process should be the same as that used in other civil engineering projects, where the objectives for proposed use, and therefore for the design of a project, are clearly stated at the outset of the design.

Landfill design should follow a staged approach which should include at least three stages, referred to here as conceptual, outline and detailed design. In each of these stages the holistic principles for the design, construction and operation of the site should be adopted, with an appropriate level of detail for each stage.

In the conceptual stage, the designer will be principally concerned with the overall viability of the site, using experience to determine any fundamental constraints or items of major expenditure. This will result in a notional concept for the development of a site, giving approximate volumes, possible design features, and setting out the principal aspects for clarification or investigation in subsequent phases.

When the design proceeds to the outline stage, a detailed site investigation1 and scoping of environmental issues should be carried out, which will lead to a fully reasoned overall design for the construction, operation and restoration of the site.

This outline design should consider all aspects required for the satisfactory development of the site, including the cost of the development. If formal environmental assessment is required, the level of detail should be suitable for inclusion in an environmental statement.

In addition to satisfying planning requirements, the outline design is likely to form the basis of the Working Plan for the waste management licence.

The outline design should form part of the Site Manual, which provides a mechanism for the exchange of information between the design, construction and operation process. This process of transference of the designer's intentions and assumptions is essential in the attainment of the integrated approach to landfilling.

When the site progresses to construction, the outline design should be developed into a fully documented detailed design with sufficient detail to permit construction. The detailed design should include comprehensive calculations to confirm or qualify the outline calculations and assumptions in the outline design, but should not require major changes in concept.

The Engineering Design Behind the Eiffel Tower

Many of the world's most famous landmarks were all made possible with complex engineering designs. One of these most notably is the Eiffel Tower in France, which was built between 1887 and 1889 as an entrance arch for the World's Fair, in celebration for the French Revolution. Here in this article we shall look at some of the design engineering that was involved to create the now world famous tower.

The two engineers that had the idea for the Eiffel Tower was Emile Nouguier and Maurice Koechlin, they came up with the concept in June 1884 of a very tall tower. The design of the tower was to be much like a pylon, with four lattice work columns separated at the base that joined again at the top. The project was a confident one as the design wanted the tower to be at the grand height of 300 meters. On September the 18th 1884 the tower design was patented under the description 'for a new configuration allowing the construction of metal supports and pylons capable of exceeding a height of 300 metres.'

The public however were going to be a tough crowd to please for this project, so both engineers asked for the help of an architect called Stephen Sauvestre to help work on the overall appearance of the tower. The architect proposed for this grand engineering design that the legs of the monument be dressed with stonework pedestals. He also suggested a bulb-shaped design for the very top of the tower and other ornamental parts to decorate the tower. Many elements of the engineering design of the tower were simplified, but the stunning arches of the base of the tower remained.

The Eiffel Tower's engineering design also took a lot of mathematics to create, the curvature of the uprights needed to offer as much resistance as possible. At the time the tower was built many people were concerned that the tower was too daring of a shape. The tower of course needed to be strong enough to withstand the strength of the wind, which was calculated mathematically. Theories of this mathematical equation of wind resistance have been proposed throughout the years. Most recently though a theory on counterbalancing the wind point on each part of the tower, with the tension between the constructions has been looked at. The tower however does sway two to three inches in the wind.

Design Principles of Wind Turbine Towers

When you appear on "Jeopardy," and the little blue screen lights up with "two basic wind turbine tower design requirements," you either answer, "What are size and elegance?" or Alex gives you that condescending look, patronizing you with his patented "I'm sorry."

Size and elegance determine the quality of your wind turbine tower's design. High-quality materials help, but even allegedly "unbreakable" materials will fail if the design does not honor the basic principles.

Questionable designs for wind turbine towers...
Towers come in as many shapes and sizes as Dunkin' Doughnuts has sweet treats, and the engineer or factory representative behind each "new and improved" design swears his will max-out power while minimizing cost. The slickest sales guys will show multi-color charts and graphs, dramatically proving how their towers beat the competition by every measure-except you never have heard of the strange measures and bizarre calculus these guys have applied to make their graphs bubble-up in just the right places. The more you study, the more perplexed you become. Meanwhile, you really would like to get yours and running before fossil fuels run-out and something vaguely apocalyptic befalls.

The slicker the sales pitch, the greater the hyperbole, the more enthusiasm in the sales guy's voice, the more you absolutely must not trust the guy's claims if they seem unreasonable. As you select yours, keep the basics firmly in mind: You want yours to spread as fat as possible and stretch as tall as possible with just enough of just the right stuff. Guyed wires, for example, do not meet the test of elegance if in a high visibility area though they are a great choice for many.

You do not need an advanced degree in civil engineering to select the right tower for your location and machine. You do, however, need unwavering common sense. Among big wind turbine towers, the principle of "big and elegant" always applies, and common sense prevails. It may not be as important for smaller towers.

Well-designed wind turbine towers...
Civil engineers no less than fashion designers ought strictly to follow the fundamental "principle of elegance," insisting on simplicity. Conceiving it a little more practically, civil engineers ought to insist on "just enough of just the right stuff." When a design has more fluff and frou-frou than rigidity and stress tolerance, we ought not walk it down the runway or erect it in our backyards. Too many moving parts make wind generator towers vulnerable. Lattice towers and welded steel posts with guyed wires will perform well in small earthquakes and high winds, but please beware because Mother Nature's gyrations can tear out your anchors if not installed properly.

What is Cardboard Engineering? From Box Making to POS to Hobby to Interactive Marketing Products

What is Cardboard engineering? The term does not exist on Wikipedia. To find Web search for "definition of cardboard engineering" and other similar questions, no results. You will not find "cardboard engineering" on a U.S. Web site (they call it cardboard, but "cardboard engineering" can not be found, o.) However, if you "cardboard engineering" to relate well Google.com 3,000,000 results, while a search for "cardboard engineering" produces1740000 results.

So, back to the original question - what is Cardboard Engineering? To find out, let's look at several examples - producing all very different things, but each field is defined as committed to the development board.

Companies using cardboard boxes and packing materials, expertise, products that are very common in a rectangular box, which could be to create a highly innovative product rangeto act as a presentation package. The term "cardboard engineering" seems to cover the closing mechanisms, with names like Crash-lock bottom, side panel locks lock and tuck top.

Society, which shows the manufacture of Point of Sale also the use of cardboard engineering techniques to design units POS enormous feet from the floor upwards to meet with donors. Larger companies employ sophisticated POS systems, CAD design, cutting plotters and large format printersmay include in its construction and work in a variety of materials, cardboard, corrugated board and Folding Boxboard.

There are many engineers who use their skills as a hobby, creating models and automata. This group is closely linked to others with crafts and hobby interest in engineering paper, paperboard leads to the fact that the books are available to him and origami related. These groups may well represent the largest number of participants, with millions of worldwideEnthusiasts.

However, there is one area where the cardboard engineering can generate - especially in the world of business to business marketing promotion. Involved a combination of skills from different worlds of engineering paper, packaging promotions, craft paper, packaging and structural technology for designing pop-up books drawn up; cardboard products developed for promoting and advertising market might producefascinating.

Products in this area have the most incredible moves. There are no pop-ups of products, from rubber bands, which in all shapes and sizes can be supplied with energy. They are often used in direct marketing and direct mail from the pack to the recipient of a surprise. There are other products which are very demanding with movements that develop as they grow turn to open or rotate. There are many interactive products designed to keep the interest of B2B customers. British companywith a wide range of examples like these, Whitney Woods.

So what is the engineering of cardboard? Well, with a long, hard look at the results prominent in search of "cardboard engineering" made, it appears that is relevant to a concept of a proposed three-dimensional object, the Cardboard - boxes and covers the display unit on models and production of promotional products.
